Letter is a popular applied style which is found in early age. It plays a vital role in the history of Chinese literature because of its unity in application and aesthetic taste. During Three Kingdoms and Western and Eastern Jin Dynasty period, literature walked into the era of self-consciousness, as well as a period for letters to flourish. A prosperous scene appeared in writing, and its subject matter diverse with distinctive styles of the era. In this paper, we will start with the development of letters from the Qin Dynasty to the Three Kingdoms and Western and Eastern Jin Dynasty period, as well as focuses on the latter period and combine with many symbolic writing in that period. We are looking forward to reproducing the development of letter in the Three Kingdoms and Western and Eastern Jin Dynasty period and give an in-depth analysis in subject, contents and artistic characteristics etc.Chapter I:trace the origin of letters and to explain the function of letters, sort out the development of letters from the Qin Dynasty to the Three Kingdoms and Western and Eastern Jin Dynasty period.Chapter II:analyze the format characters in the opening and closing of letters written by ancient people, and a brief review on ways of transmission of letters.Chapter III:Discuss the letters of the Three Kingdoms and Western and Eastern Jin Dynasty period by types and subjects and compare with the letters with similar subject in the same period, with the classification of subject matter discussed, View from the contents of a letter, the subject of the letters have been involved in all aspects of social life, from the military and political events to daily life, from literature and art to human relationships, from landscape to the Buddhism, which shows wide range of subject matter. The letters of the Three Kingdoms and Western and Eastern Jin Dynasty period is more abundant in subjects than the former generational. Buddhism and calligraphy appreciation are two new subjects. It showed diversity in overall writing in the Western and Eastern Jin Dynasty period and Lu Yun of the Western Jin Dynasty and Wang Xizhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty is the synthesizer.Chapter IV:Analyze the artistic characteristics of letters in the Three Kingdoms and Western and Eastern Jin Dynasty period. With the influence of literature consciousness, the man of letters in the Three Kingdoms period start to focus on the expression of inner feeling and letters have became a perfect mixture of the tool of social communication and individual writing. The writing of letters by Three Cao and Seven Zi's unique features is the symbol of that period.Influenced by the circumstances of that period and Buddhism, the letters of the Western Jin and Eastern Jin Dynasty zealed with features that different with other periods. The straighten and rich features in the Western Jin Dynasty and the peace of mind feature in the Eastern Jin Dynasty in stark contrast.
