Objective This study investigated the emotion, behavior, self-concept and related factors of left-behind children.Methods A total of 530 students of grade 3-6 from one primary school in Tengzhou, shandong province were recruited. All students were assessed with The Screen for Child Anxiety Related (SCARED), Depression Self-Rating Scale (DSRSC), Children's Loneliness Scale (CLS) and Children's Self-concept Scale (PHCSS).The basic information and related factors were also recorded. All the data were input into the SPSS data base and then analyzed. The analysis methods included descriptive analysis, t-test, chi-square test and Spearman rank correlation analysis.Results 530 questionaires were sended out and 528 questionaires were withdrawed which inclued 418 left-behind children and 110 non-left-behind children. The efficient rate is 99.62%.185 left-behind children and 36 non-left-behind children who were anxiety, the detection rate respectively was 44.3% and 32.7%.The anxiety detection rate of left-behind children was higher than the non-left-behind children's (p<0.05). Left-behind children's scores on extensiveness anxiety factor (p<0.05), school terrorist factor (p<0.01) and total score (p<0.05) were higher than the non-left-behind children's.213 left-behind children and 38 non-left-behind children who were depression, the detection rate respectively was 51.0% and 34.5%. The depression detection rate of left-behind children was higher than the non-left-behind children (p<0.05). The total score of depression scale was higher than the non-left-behind children's (p<0.05).60 left-behind children and 11 non-left-behind children who were loneliness, the detection rate respectively was 14.4% and 10.0%. The loneliness detection rate was no significant difference between left-behind children and non-left-behind children (p>0.05).The total score of loneliness scale was higher than the non-left-behind children's (p<0.05).There were 186 left-behind children and 38 non-left-behind children on lower level of self-concept. The detection rate respectively was 44.5% and 34.5%. The detection rate of left-behind children was higher than the non-left-behind children (p<0.05).Left-behind children's scores of behavior (P<0.05), intelligence and school (P<0.001), happiness and satisfaction (P<0.001), total score (P<0.05)were significantly lower than non-left-behind children's.Left-behind schoolgirls' scores of extensiveness anxiety (p<0.05), concise anxiety (p<0.05),behavior (p<0.001), intelligence and school (P<0.05),gregariousness (p<0.01), happiness and satisfaction (P<0.05) were higher than Left-behind schoolboys'. The scores of depression scale and loneliness scale were no significant difference.The elder group of left-behind children were worse on social terrorist and depression scale than another group,but better on loneliness. There were no significant difference on self-concept between two different age groups of left-behind children.The related factors of left-behind children's anxiety included family finances, relationship between raising people and left-behind children, raising expectations also included leisure activities, learning achievement, peer relation of left-behind children, etc.The related factors of left-behind children's depression included supporter culture level, family finances, relationship between raising people and left-behind children, etc.The related factors of left-behind children's loneliness included relationship between raising people and left-behind children, raising expectations also included leisure activities, learning achievement, peer relation of left-behind children, etc.The related factors of left-behind children's self-concept included family finances, relationship between raising people and left-behind children, raising expectations also included leisure activities, learning achievement, peer relation of left-behind children, etc.Conclusion1 Mental health level of left-behind children was lower than non- left-behind children.2 Compared with left-behind schoolgirls, left-behind schoolboys had less emotional problems, but more behavior problems and lower self-concept level. Anxiety and depression increased with age, but loneliness reduced.3 Left-behind children's mental health related with parents working outside, but also with other family situation and school situation, such as:relationship between raising people and left-behind children, raising expectations and leisure activities, learning achievement, peer relation of left-behind children.
