Research On The Relationship Among Academic Burnout, Perfectionism And Parenting Style Of College Students

As a behavior of negative learning psychology, the Academic Burnout has gained many attentions from domestic and foreign scholars. Academic Burnout will severity influence the physical and mental well-being, as well their academic success of college students. This study made a preliminary investigation in 779 undergraduates in 6 universities, using the College Students Academic Burnout Questionnaire (the adapted version of the MBI-GS), the College Students Perfectionism Questionnaire, and the EMBU. Then explore the relationship of academic burnout, perfectionism, and parental rearing patterns.The results indicate that:1. Academic burnout in college students is not severe on the whole. The percentage of students that have academic burnout is about 26.1% in the total participants.2. The academic burnout level of male students is significant higher than female students. The Emotional exhaustion, Cynicism dimensions and the academic burnout total score of junior students are significantly higher than freshmen and sophomore, seems like the level of academic burnout will rise as the grade ascend. The Emotional exhaustion of students of science is significantly higher than students of arts. Then educational level of parents is also a good predictor, the higher the educational level of parents, the severer the academic burnout level college students have.3. Perfectionism in college students is on moderate level. Most of them have developing adaptive perfectionism. The levels of male students'perfectionism in all four dimensions are significant higher than female students. The Concern Over Mistakes and Parental criticism of junior are higher than the others, but on the dimensions of Personal standards and Organization, freshmen're significant higher than the others. The Concern Over Mistakes of students of arts is significantly higher than students of science. Then educational level of parents is a good predictor as well.4. The parenting style college students perceived more are positive patterns. In each dimension, male and females students have significant difference.5. Perfectionism played a partial mediator role in the relationship between parenting style and the level of academic burnout.
