Objective:The goal of this study is to measure and characterize the morphologicalparameters of distal femur of normal adult Chinese people by CT method, and todisscuss the differences between male and female in morphology of distal femur, andto supply some valuable references for TKA(total knee arthroplasty)as well as forfemural prosthesis' designing for Chinese people.Methods:70normal Chinese adults(35male and35female,aging from21to60) wereexamined of their knees by CT scaning device which gap is1mm.The scaning imagesof distal femur which we need were collected and handled with3D reconstruction orwith Picasa3and iSee graphic software systems. The highest point of medial andlateral condyles,trans-condylar axis (TEA),post condylar line(PCL) and anteriorcondylar line (ACL) were marked in these handled images (1)Then the height of thelateral condylar(LAP), the width of the femur(ML) through the transepicondylarline, and the femural aspect ratio(ML/LAP) were measured.(2) The trochlear angle, together with the posterior condylar angle(PCA)and the anterior condylar angle(ACA)were measured. The data of these parameters were recorded and grouped. Then thecomparison between genders of these parameters were made by SPSS softwaresystem.Results:.1,The mean of all70people's PCA is5.8°±1.4°,and the men's is5.3°±1.3°while the women's is6.3°±1.2°.The difference of PCA between genders is significant(P<0.05); The mean of all70people's ACA is9.0°±1.4°,and the men's is9.4°±1.3°while the women's is8.5°±1.2°.The difference of ACA between genders is significant(P<0.05); The mean of all70people's trochlear angle is130.2°±9.9°,and the men's is129.1°±9.0°while the women's is131.3°±10.8°.There is no significant differencebetween genders(P>0.05).2,The mean of all70people's ML is78.9±6.3mm and the men's is83.8±4.5mmwhile the women s is73.9±3.1mm.The difference of ML between genders is significant(P<0.05);The mean of all70people's height of LAP is62.9±4.4mm and themen's is66.3±2.8mm while the women's is59.5±2.8mm.The difference of LAPbetween genders is significant(P<0.05).The mean of all70people's femoral aspectratio(ML/LAP) is1.25±0.33and the men's is1.26±0.03while the women's is1.24±0.04.The difference of ML/LAP between genders is significant (P<0.05) as well. Conclusion:According to our study and some others',differences exist in morphologyof distal femur between Chinese and western people. Also, the defferences exit in maleand female in Chineses people, and these differences should be concerned in designingof femural prosthesis for Chinese people. The selecting and placing of femuralprosthesis before or during the TKA operation should also be adjusted accuratelyaccording to the morphology of Chinese people and their gender differeces.
