Objective:To establish the reference value of serum leptin and osteoprotegerin(OPG) in Chinese healthy women and compared those with other races. Methods:The serum OPG and leptin in 679 Chinese healthy women aged 20-81y were measured by an ELISA. The values of OPG and leptin in healthy adult of other races were acquired from previous reports on the same. Results:The geometric mean values (±SD) of the serum leptin and OPG in Chinese women were 10.4±1.98ng/ml,3.45±1.92pmol/L respectively. The serum leptin in Chinese women had significant positive correlation with age, weight, body mass index(BMI),but was not related with height, age at menopause (AM), years since menopause (YSM). Sreum leptin in normal weight, overweight and obesity were significant different. The reference value of serum leptin in normal weight was 5.25-12.57ng/ml. Serum OPG in Chinese women increased with age and reached the highest in middle age, then began to decrease. Serum OPG and body weight, body mass index were not relevant. The serum OPG was negatively related to height and YSM, and in postmenopausal and perimenopausal women were significantly higher than in premenopausal women. The upper limit of the reference value of serum OPG in healthy Chinese women was confirmed to 6.74pmol/L. The serum OPG and leptin were not related. The values of serum leptin in Chinese women were significantly lower than those in white, black, and Mexican American women in the same age,and highter than others in the same BMI. The serum OPG in middle-aged Chinese women was significantly higher than that in middle-aged Austrian and Icelandic women; however, this is quite contrary to the results obtained in the cases of old-aged women. Conclusions:These results provide reliable reference values for OPG and leptin in Chinese healthy women. The serum of OPG and leptin differ with ethnicity. Objective:To establish the reference value of serum leptin and OPG in Chinese healthy men and compared those with other races. Methods:The serum leptin and OPG in 229 Chinese healthy men aged 20-81y were measured by an ELISA. The values of OPG and leptin in healthy men of other races were acquired from previous reports on the same. Results:The geometric mean values (±SD) of the serum leptin and OPG in Chinese men and were 4.9±2.42ng/ml,3.49±1.57pmol/L respectively. The serum leptin in Chinese men had no correlation with age, height and had significant positive correlation with weight, BMI. Sreum leptin in normal weight, overweight and obesity were significant different. The upper limit of the reference value of serum leptin in normal weight was 8.72ng/ml. Serum OPG in Chinese men increased with age, and after 70 years increased rapidly. Serum OPG was not related to weight, but related to BMI. Sreum OPG in normal weight, overweight and obesity were no difference. The reference value of serum OPG in the healthy men under 70 years was 0.24-6.28pmol/L.The serum OPG and leptin were not related. The curve-fitting of leptin with BMI in this group was significantly higher than white, black, and Mexican American men. The value of serum OPG in Chinese men was significantly higher than Austrian. The serum OPG in Chinese men was increased with age, and those in Icelandic and Austrian men were stable before 70 years, after 70 years increased sharply. Conclusions:These results provide reliable reference values for OPG and leptin in Chinese healthy men. The serum of OPG and leptin differ with ethnicity. Objective:To investigate the gender differences of Chinese healthy adults of serum leptin and OPG.Methods:To compare the best fitting-curve of leptin with BMI and OPG with age in the men and women. Results:The serum leptin concentration of women was related to age, but not related in men. Serum leptin in women were significantly higher than men. The serum OPG in both women and men group were positively correlated with age. The serum OPG in women increased with age and reached the highest in 60 years, then began to decrease, but in men it always increased with age and after 70 years it growth faster. Conclusions:The differences of serum leptin between women and men are considered to the difference of body fat content and fat distribution. The differences of serum OPG between women and men are mainly affected by the sex hormones.
