Objective:To apply the NRS 2002 standard to screen the nutritional status of pre-operative patients who suffered from gastrointestinal cancer, so as to know nutritional state of patients and to provide some references for reasonable pre-operative nutritional support. Methods:We selected a total of 653 pre-operative cases of gastrointestinal cancer admitted in the General Surgery Department from November 2007 to December 2009 that prepared to undergo selective surgical procedure. And nutritional risks screening for them were carried out by adopting NRS 2002 issued by ESPEN in 2002.Results:The malnutritional risk incidence was 38.3% and scores of 250 patients(38.3%)were≥3, including 162 men (24.8%) and 88 women (13.5%). Malnutrition was more frequently occurred in gastric and colonic cancer patients than that in rectal cancer patients. There were any differences in malnutritional and malnutritional risk incidence with gastrointestional cancer patients or more than 65 years old.(P<0.0.5) There were significant differences in malnutritional and malnutritional risk incidence between gastric and colonic cancer patients, and between gastric and rectal cancer patients.(P<0.0.5) There were any differences between the patients underwent radical subtotal and total gastrectomy. It showed that there was relationship between the malnutrition and the traditional measures like BMI, ALB, PAB, Ly, Hb except WBC. And there was little evidence for the relationship between the malnutrition and gender, age and different types of surgeries. Conclusion:Patients with gastrointestinal cancer have higher malnutrition risks before operation. Adopting NRS 2002 is suitable for them to screen their nutritional state. Patients with malnutrition risks will benefit from suitable nutritional support so as to reduce complication rates and length of hospital stay and improve the prognosis.
