PurposeDrainage therapy is an effective minimally invasive surgery to treat gigantic cystic lesions of jaws, but its internal mechanism is not clear. The study was to investigate the expressions of MMP-2, Cyclin D1 and S-100 in jaw cystic lesions and the changes of their expressions after drainage therapy.MethodsSeven cases with gigantic cystic lesions of the jaw, including one with ameloblastoma (AB), two with keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) and four with dentigerous cyst (DC)), were treated with drainage therapy in the Deptartment of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Affiliated Hospital of Medical College, Qingdao University from August, 2006 to April,2009. The cystic tissues were obtained for pathological examination before and after drainage therapy. The expressions of MMP-2, Cyclin D1 and S-100 were detected through immunohistochemistric staining. The tissues of AB, KCOT, DC, oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) and normal oral mucosa (NOM) were as control. The data was analyzed with SPSS 13.0 software package.ResultsThe expression rates of MMP-2 in AB, KCOT and DC were 100%,42.86%, and 35.68% respectively. There was statistical significant (P=0.001, P=0.002, P=0.001) compared with OSCC and NOM. But there was no statistical significant between the preoperative expression and the postoperative one. The expression rates of Cyclin D1 in AB, KCOT and DC were 14.17%,14.26%, and 14.28% respectively. There was statistical significant (P=0.002, P=0.009, P=0.002) compared with OSCC and NOM. But there was no statistical significant between the preoperative expression and the postoperative one. The expression rates of S-100 in AB, KCOT and DC were 71.43%,28.57%, and 21.43% respectively. There was statistical significant (P=0.008, P=0.003, P=0.003) compared with OSCC and NOM. But there was no statistical significant between the preoperative expression and the postoperative one. ConclusionThe expression of MMP-2, Cyclin D1and S-100 was positive in gigantic cystic lesions of jaws. But there was no statistical significant between preoperative cystic lesions and postoperative ones. The internal mechanism of drainage therapy of gigantic cystic lesions of jaws needs more explorations.
