Curcuma kwangsiensis S. G. Lee et C. F. Liang was a genuine Chinese medicinal material produced in Guangxi. In order to provide basis for the quality assessment of Curcama kwangsinesis, the content of curcumin and volatile oil were measured in different parts of Curcama kwangsinesis which were grown in different areas and seasons through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and steam distillation (SD). The results were as follows:1. The growth of Curcama kwangsinesis could be divided into four stages, i. e. seedling stage, seedling leaf growth stage, rhizome expansion stage, accumulation of dry matter stage. In seedling period and seedling leaf growth period, the dry matter accumulation mainly in leaves; In rhizome expansion period, the growth center was gradually transformed from leaves to rhizome and root tuber; In accumulation of dry matter period, the ratio of dry matter of the underground parts was 79.45%.2. Dynamic accumulation of curcumin and volatile oil from rhizome, root, root tuber of Curcuma kwangsiensis was not consistent with dynamic change of its yield. The results showed the content of curcumin and volatile oil reached at it's peak in early November. Therefore, the best harvest time of Curcuma kwangsiensis was determined as early November according to the accumulation of dry matter and dynamic accumulation of curcumin and volatile oil Curcuma kwangsiensis.3. The contents of curcumin of Curcuma kwangsiensis from different habitats, different parts were different, among which the content of curcumin in rhizome and root of Curcuma kwangsiensis from Jiuzhou town was the highest and Bolao town was the highest in root tuber while that from Nanning was the lowest.Form the measured results in rhizome of Curcuma kwangsiensis in twelve different growing areas of Guangxi, the content of volatile oil was all meet the standard of volatile oil in Chinese pharmacopeia in addition to Qintang, Shangsi and Xingye. The content of volatile oil in root tuber of Curcuma kwangsiensis from Xingye was the highest while that from Luwu was the lowest.4. The results showed that the majority of Curcuma kwangsiensis from different places, different time and different parts had the similar characteristic peaks of infrared spectra, The IR characteristic peaks of Curcuma kwangsiensis obviously appear as the main characteristic peaks of curcumin and volatile oil. The characteristic peaks of curcumin were 3300 cm-1,1637 cm-1,1519cm-1 And the characteristic peaks of volatile oil were 2927 cm-1,1737 cm-1,1375cm-1. The changes of absorption peak near 3300cm-1,1641 cm-1,1519 cm-1,3000-2800 cm-1,1750-1735 cm-1 and 1375 cm-1 were reflected the changes of curcumin and volatile oil from different parts of Curcuma kwangsiensis and closely related to the content of curcumin and volatile oil.
