Objective To investigate the incidence, average happenjing time and risk factors of mechanical phlebitis associated with peripherally inserted central catheter through the prospective investigation of cancer patients with PICC.And To research the effectiveness of four different measures used after PICC catheterization to prevent mechanical phlebitis. Methods From April to December,2009,we prospectively investigated the canter patients who had their PICCs in the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University Medical College. We collected all the patients who met the admission criteria of our study. We followed up these patients for 2 weeks prospectively and recorded the information when they had their PICCs insertion and their general information. The differences in the the incidence, average happenjing time and risk factors were examined by logistic regression analysis. And we took preventive measures to the patients who had their PICCs from May to August,2010.And we followed up these patients for 2 weeks prospectively and recorded the information when they had their PICCs insertion and their general information too. And the purpose is to research the effectiveness of four different measures used after PICC catheterization to prevent mechanical phlebitis. Results At the end of the two weeks 21.33% patients were foune to have mechanical phlebitis and the average happening time of the mechanical phlebitis related to PICC was 7.43±5.618 day.The site of the intubation (OR=0.591,95%CI=0.367-0.952),the catheter tip position after PICC insertion (OR=6.403,95%CI=1.930-21.244),the number time (OR=0.198,95%CI=0.046-0.848)when the PICC was successful to insert in the patients and whether delivery the catheter was difficult after successful puncture were the risk factors related to the machanical phlebitis associated with the PICC.Conclusion (1) The site of the intubation (OR=0.591,95%CI=0.367-0.952),the catheter tip position after PICC insertion (OR=6.403,95%CI=1.930-21.244),the number time (OR=0.198,95%CI=0.046-0.848) when the PICC is successful to insert in the patients and whether delivery the catheter is difficult after successful puncture are the risk factors related to the machanical phlebitis associated with the PICC.(2)The best time to prevent the mechanical phlebitis related to PICC is in two weeks after the PICC insertion.(3) The method of wet-hot compress is the most effective method of the four to prevent the mechanical phlebitis following PICC catheterization.
