Firstly, the chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of the genus of Heteropappus Less. have been reviewed systematicly.Heteropappus altaicus (willd.) Novokr. is a medicine plant belongs to the genus of Heteropappus Less. (Compositae). The geuns of Heteropappus Less includes about 30 species, distributed worldwide, but mainly in central and northeastern of Asia, in which 12 species in China. As the traditional Mongolian medicine, Heteropappus Less are used to clean and expel miasma, relieve inflammation, treat extravasated plague, influenza, measles, scarlatina, hot blood and so on.So far, many good bioactivity compounds (steroids, flavones, diterpenes and triterpenes) have been isolated from the genus of Heteropappus Less. collected in Mongolia. Due to geographical factors on the chemical constituents of medicinal plants is very significant, we studied the chemical constituents of H. altaicus collected in low latitude regions. Here, we studied the chemical investigations of H. altaicus collected in Shan Dong Province. The chemical constituents have been isolated commonly by column chromatography and preparative thin chromatography (PTLC) to afforded 27 compounds, in which 20 compounds have been elucidated by spectra methods, such as IR, MS, 1H, 13C NMR, DEPT, 2D NMR as well as chemical transformation. Four sesquiterpenes (H1-H4) are new compounds, among them H1 have a novel tricyclic sesquiterpene skeleton. So far, only two sesquiterpenes were isolated from the essential oil of H. altaicus. So climate, temperature and other regional factors on the chemical composition of medicinal plants is very significan.
