Objective To investigate the pathogeny distribution of UGIB(upper gastrointestinal bleeding) in the elderly age over 60 years old and its relationship with sex, age and other correlative factors. Methods In this study, from January 2008 to December 2010,215 hospitalized patients with UGIB from our hospital Gastroenterology department were selected.Data collected using excel spreadsheet, and then use the SPSS 17.0 statistical software for data analysis, count data usingχ2 test. Significant levelα=0.05.Results The most common causes of UGIB was gastric ulcer, and then were duodenal ulcer, esophageal gastric varices, complex ulcer (CU), gastric cancer (GC), Mallory-Weiss Syndrome (MWS), anastomotic ulcer (AU). Other causes, including gastric polyps, acute hemorrhagic gastritis, esophageal erosion and etc.Data shows the incidence of malignant disease (GC) in the elderly with UGIB accounted for 5.58%, and 94.42% of benign diseases, with significant differences. (P<0.0001).Date shows that there are 157 cases of male and female 58 cases, male to female ratio was 2.71:1, The incidence of duodenal ulcer in old female was significantly higher than old male, with significant differences (P<0.05), and the incidence of CU in old female was lower than older male, with significant differences (P<0.05).Data shows that the number of elderly patients with UGIB in fall and winter is much more than the number in spring and summer, with significant differences (P<0.01), GU incidence was significantly higher in autumn and winter than that in spring and summer(P <0.05). Incidence of EGVB in spring was significantly higher than that in other seasons(P<0.05).Conclusions The most common causes of UGIB was peptic ulcer, followed by esophageal varices and gastric cancer.UGIB in the elderly, the incidence of benign disease is much higher than the incidence of malignant disease. The incidence of duodenal ulcer in old female was significantly higher than old male, the incidence of CU in old female was lower than older male。The number of elderly patients with UGIB in fall and winter is more than the number in the spring and summer, gastric ulcer incidence was significantly higher than that in autumn and winter then in spring and summer, EGVB incidence was significantly higher than that in spring then in other seasons.
