Objective: We conducted a meta-analysis to estimate the effects of asthma education management on asthma control for adultsMethods: Correlative literature was searched by computer.Randomized controlled trials of asthma education management for adults were brought into this research according to the inclusion and the exclusion criteria.English articles were retrieved from PubMed,Embase,The Cochrane Library and Chinese articles were from China National Knowledge Infrastructur(eCNKI),VIP-database,Wanfang Database, covering the span from 1990 until February of 2011.The search terms included asthma ,asthma education ,asthma management, self-management. The reference lists of the articles were checked to retrieve citations to articles missed by the search steps. If the information from these articles were not complete, contact the author .With the method of Cochrane systematic review.2 reviewers assessed the quality of the studies, extracted data independently . Data were combined and analyzed with RevMan 5.0 to evaluate the effect of health education management on asthma control for adults. Heterogeneity across studies was determined. if there is Heterogeneity in studies, use a random effects model.Conversely, use a fixed effects model. Because the studies use different standards to assessed asthma knowledge score and asthma quality of life, the two indexes were analyzed by the standardized mean difference. The Meta-analysis was used in four aspects including the asthma knowledge, emergency department visits, days off work and asthma quality of life. Results: Seven randomized controlled studies meet inclusion criteria.including 1105cases.It showed significant differences in asthma knowledge score (SMD 1.28; 95%CI 0.51 to 2.05;z=3.27,P=0.001) ,days off work( WMD-3.07;95%CI -5.46 to -2.05;z=2.51,P=0.01 )and asthma quality of life (SMD2.28;95%CI 1.10 to 3.45;z=3.81,P=0.0001) between the health education intervention group and the control group, but no significant differences in emergency department visits. Conclusions: Providing asthma education can improve patients ,knowledge of asthma and reduce the days off work, then improve the quality of life for adult asthma patients ,but reducing incidents caused by asthma (such as emergency department visits) is not clearly. It should be necessary to do further studies on the health education.
