ObjectivesTo quantitatively summarize the association of interleukin-6 gene polymorphisms with coronary heart disease using meta-analysis in Asian populations.MethodsWe surveyed studies on the association of interleukin-6 gene polymorphisms with coronary heart disease in Pubmed, Elsevier Science Direct, Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Wanfang and China National Knowledge Infrastructure. All articles were strictly evaluated and screened according to inclusion criteria, and meta-analysis were perfomed for the included studies using RevMan 4.2 software.ResultsWe identified 11 studies (1821 cases and 2453 controls) using search. Of eligible studies, 8 studies were conducted in Chinese, 1 studies were conducted in Korean, 1 studies were conducted in Japanese, 1 studies were conducted in Indian. Meta-analysis was performed for three interleukin-6 gene polymorphisms (-572C/G,-174G/C, and -634C/G). Significant association was seen for -572C/G polymorphism (G vs C: OR=1.48, 95%CI=1.21-1.82, P=0.0002; CG+GG vs CC: OR=1.57, 95%CI=1.33-1.86, P<0.00001; GG vs CC+CG: OR=1.82, 95%CI=1.23-2.68, P<0.003; GG vs CC: OR=2.01, 95%CI=1.34-2.99, P=0.0007; CG vs CC: OR=1.51, 95%CI=1.27-1.79, P<0.00001) and -634C/G polymorphism (G vs C: OR=1.25, 95%CI=1.04-1.49, P=0.01; CG+GG vs CC: OR=1.14, 95%CI=0.92-1.41, P=0.24; GG vs CC+CG: OR=2.30, 95%CI=1.48-3.56, P=0.0002; GG vs CC: OR=2.23, 95%CI=1.44-3.48, P=0.0004; CG vs CC: OR=1.02, 95%CI=0.82-1.29, P=0.83) in interleukin-6 gene, but not for -174G/C polymorphism (C vs G: OR=0.92, 95%CI=0.64-1.32, P=0.65; GC+CC vs GG: OR=0.82, 95%CI=0.55-1.22, P=0.33; GC vs GG: OR=0.74, 95%CI=0.49-1.13, P=0.17).ConclusionsThis meta-analysis demonstrates that coronary heart disease is associated with interleukin-6 gene -572C/G and -634C/G polymorphisms in Asian populations, but not -174G/C.
