Objectives To understand the quality of surface water and pollution extent of phthalates in source water of Xiangjiang River, so as to providing a basis for assessing phthalic acid ester in the future.Methods Four monitoring sections were set along the Xiangjiang River from upstream to lower reaches within urban district, where water samples were respectively collected in November 2009, March 2010 and June 2010 in accordance according to Chinese environmental protection standard assembly: water quality analysis method(2001) and the water quality monitoring index was in accordant with the basis of HJ/T91-2002 the Technical Specifications Requirements for Monitoring of Surface Water and Waste Water formulated by SEPA. The data were analyzed according to the first quality standard of the GB3838-2002 Surface Water Environmental Quality Standard. Further more, another group water samples were collected from above area and on the date according to time series of continuous seven days span and DMP, DEP, DBP, BBP and DEHP detection of the source water and the effluent water were performed by GC/MS.Results Results of conventional organic item showed that passing rate of pH value was 100%, and potassium permanganate index, dissolved oxygen and volatile phenol were 86 %,91.3% and 96% respectively. The passing rate of source water for oxygen demand in dry season was significantly lower than that in wet season. The passing rates of reservoir of Northern suburb and reservoir of Southern suburb water for these indicators were significantly higher than the rest of the river water. The level of DMP, DEP, DBP, BBP, DEHP did not show statistical diference between the dry season and wet season (P>0.05).Conclusion 1. The water quality in Dingzikou and Gandalei is grim, and series of protective measures for water quality should be set down and carried out. 2. Xiangjiang river has been polluted by phthalates in some degree, which reveals potential risk of phthalates pollution in drinking water.
