ObjectiveTo study the clinical curative effect and the safety of Restoring Normal Bowel Movement on improving the decreased gastrointestinal motility of post-operative esophageal cancer patients. And furthermore, to explore the positive role of Chinese herbal drugs on improving the gastrointestinal motility. Finally, to explore the mechanism of Chinese herbal drugs and prove their therapeutic efficacy.Methods60 patients who intubated by the nasojejunal tube after the esophageal cancer surgery were randomly divided into the treatment group and the control group, and either group has 30 cases equally. All the 60 patients were cured by normal treatment of enteral nutrition, antibiotic and electrolytes. However, the patients of the treatment group were given the Chinese herbal drugs of Restoring Normal Bowel Movement via the nasojejunal tube, while the patients in the control group were given placebo (normal saline) for comparison. The Chinese herbal drugs and the placebo were all heated to 37℃by automatic thermostat, and this treatment was given once a day. The data of the intestinal sound recovery time, the flatus passing time, the defecation time and the quantity of gastric juice for 3 days were obtained after 3-day's treatment. The statistics data were analyzed by statistical software and compared between the two groups. The levels of plasma MTL and VIP for the 60 patients before and after the esophagal cancer surgery were detected by the radioimmunoassay. These statistics data of the interior-group and inter-group were also analysed by statistical software. So the therapeutic efficacy of Restoring Normal Bowel Movement can be evaluated by these statistical results.ResultsCompared with the control group, the flatus passing time(P<0.01),the defecation time(P<0.01),the intestinal sound recovery time(P<0.01) and the quantity of gastric juice for 3 days(P<0.05) of the treatment group show significant improvement, which indicates an important statistical signification. Before operation, the concentrations of plasma MTL and VIP of the two groups do not show evident difference, then there was no statistically signification (P>0.05). After operation the levels of plasma MTL of the treatment group increase apparently, while the levels of VIP decrease, which indicates an important statistical signification (P<0.01). However, the levels of plasma MTL and VIP of the control group before and after the operation do not show any statistically signification (P>0.05).ConclusionThe Chinese herbal drugs of the Restoring Normal Bowel Movement via nasojejunal tube can significantly enhance the gastrointestinal motility of the esophagal cancer patients after operation. The Chinese herbal drugs can decrease the flatus passing time, the defecation time, the intestinal sound recovery time and the quantity of gastric juice. This effective mechanism relate to the increased MTL levels and the decreased VIP levels. The Restoring Normal Bowel Movement is a safe and effective therapeutics for patients undergoing esophageal cancer surgery. This treatment not only can promote the gastrointestinal motility, but also can improve the gastrointestinal peristalsis and normal gastrointestinal condition. Therefore, this Chinese herbal drugs treatment is a useful method for reducing the risk of postoperative complications and shorting the cure time in hospital. Furthermore, this research provides a reliable basis of EBM (Evidence-based medicine) for improving the decreased gastrointestinal motility of postoperative esophageal cancer patients.
