Stauntonia chinensis DC. ( Lardizabalacea )commonly known as"Ye Mu Gua", has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine, especially for analgesic,sedative and anti–inflammatory purposes. Except for saponins, the plant is also riched in flavonoids, phenolic compounds, carbohydrate compounds, multivitamins, all kinds of mineral matter and so on.Saponins from Stauntonia chinensis DC. have many biological activities, such as protection for liver, inhibition for cancers, anti-inflammatory, reinforcement for immunopotency, to cut down blood sugar, inhibition for oxidation and so on. Various extraction methods such as flash extraction, ethanolrefluxing extraction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction were compared for the extraction of total saponins from the rattan of Stauntonia chinensis DC. with thecontent of the total saponins of Stauntonia chinensis DC. as index. The results show that the total saponins extracted by flash extraction is more than that extracted by other methods. The flash extraction, as a new method, requires lesstime and is safe to people. Compared with ethanol refluxing extraction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction, the flash extraction technology is a rapid, safe and efficient method for the extraction of the total saponins from the rattan of Stauntonia chinensis DC..Recently, research for constituents of Stauntonia chinensis DC. is less, and the bioactive constituents of it are still not very clear. This situation holds up the medicine exploitation of Stauntonia chinensis DC.. Meanwhile, in order to know the material foundation of biological activity further and make the medicine exploitation of Stauntonia chinensis DC. thoroughly, we have a research on Stauntonia chinensis DC. from Nanning city of Guangxi province. The compounds were isolated by the solvent extraction, silica gel, reversed-phase silica gel column chromatography and semi-preparative HLPC. 40 compounds were isolated from the n-BuOH-soluble fraction of the 60% ethanol extraction. Structures of 23 compounds were elucidated on the basis of physicochemical and spectra methods. Among them, we obtained 10 olean-type saponins, 6 terpenoids, 6 phenolics and 1 steride. Compounds 5, 6, and 17 were new compounds. Compounds 1 and 10 were obtained for the first time from the genus.The threer new compounds were established as : 28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-30-norhederagenin ( 5 ), 3-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-30-norhederagenin( 6 ), 2-methoxy -4-[(1S,2S)-1,2,3-trihydroxypropyl]phenyl 1-O-β-D-{6-O-[(4-hydroxy-5-methoxy) benzoyl)]}-glucopyranoside ( 17 ). Other twenty known compounds were identified as: 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-hederagenin ( 1 ), 3-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→3)-a-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→2)-a-L- arabinopyranosyl-hederagenin ( 2 ), 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-hederagenin-28-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl ester ( 3 ), 28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-hederagenin ( 4 ), 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-30-norhederagenin( 7 ), 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-30- norhederagenin-28-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D- glucopyranosyl ester ( 8 ), 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-30-norhederagenin-28-O-β-D- glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl ester ( 9 ), 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-Akebonic acid ( 10 ), 29- hydroxy-oleanolic acid ( 11 ), 3-epi-29-hydroxy-oleanolic acid ( 12 ), 30- norhederagenin ( 13 ), 3-epi-30-norhederagenin ( 14 ), hederagenin ( 15 ), vomifoliol ( 16 ), 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphen-yl)ethyl,6-[(2E)-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-2-propenoate]-β-D-glucopyranoside ( 18 ),1-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl-(1→2)-β-D- glucopyranosyl-[4-hydroxy-3-methoxy]phenyl ( 19 ), N-trans-feruloyltyramine( 20 ),Stauntophenoside A ( 21 ), dehydrodiconiferylalcohol ( 22 ),β-daucosterol( 23 ).
