Background:This study aimed to discuss the indication, feasibility, relative merits and outcome of laparoscopic repair of abdominal hernias occurred after open surgery.Patients and Methods:The clinical data of 37 patients with abdominal hernias treated by laparoscopic repair, including 21 cases of incisional hernia,8 cases of parastomal hernia,8 cases of recurrent indirect inguinal hernia, and the data of 18 patients with abdominal hernias treated by open mesh repair, including 10 cases of incisional hernia,2 cases of parastomal hernia,6 cases of recurrent indirect inguinal hernia, between January 2007 and June 2010 were analyzed retrospectively. All cases occurred after abdominal surgery. Clinical data such as operative time, blood loss, hospital stay, complications and recurrence rates were evaluated. Results:All cases were performed successfully. The operation time was significantly longer in the open group (85.58±23.76min)than in the laparoscopic repair group(41.54±16.78min)(p<0.01).The blood loss was found significantly much more in the open group (79.56±50.25ml)than in the laparoscopic repair group(9.23±3.52ml) (p<0.01).The time of start of liquid diet was longer in the open group (1.12±0.52days)than in the laparoscopic repair group(1.85±0.73days) (p<0.01).The mean time of post-operative hospital stay of laparoscopic repair group is 3.53±1.52 days, but the time of the open group is 7.38±1.89 days(p<0.01). Surgical complications occurred in 4cases (10.81%) after laparoscopic repair and in 3 cases (16.67%)after open repair(p>0.05).No recurrence occurred after laparoscopic repair during the follow-up period of 5-29 months, but 1 case recurred (after 15 months) in the open group(4-36 months). Conclusions:Laparoscopic approach is a feasible option for postoperative abdominal hernia which would allow surgeons to overcome the problem of complex anatomy caused by last operation. And this method has the advantages of minor injury, rapid recovery and lower recurrence rate.
