Functional gastrointestinal diseases(FGIDs) is a clinically common disease in recent years, which is characterized by repeated symptom, various types,long term and lingered symptom.According to clinical practice,FGIDs usually can not be easily distinct from each other, they tend to be overlapped and mingled.The author presents a systemic summary of the current understanding of FGIDs overlapping symptom by western medicine, and the review on ancient TCM literature about the etiology, pathogenesis and treatment, and figures out the worsening factor of the FGIDs includes deficiency of spleen and stomach,exhaustion due to long illness and external invasion and improper diet.The key pathogenesis is the disorder of spleen and stomach Qi.Therefore,the author review the fundation and development of spleen and stomach ascending and descending theory,and the important essence of its physiology and pathology.Though the FGIDs has varied and overlapped symptom due to clinical observation, they have the same pathological basis,the disorder of spleen and stomach ascending and descending, they presents different form of Qi movement in different parts of human body.Combining the theory of spleen and stomach,the author explore the essence of FGIDs overlapping symptom and try to recover the normal function of spleen and stomach,summarizes common types of FGIDs,which are Qi-deficiency of spleen and stomach,disharmony between liver and spleen,dampness accumulated in spleen and Yang-deficiency of spleen and kidney, which can improve accuracy of the differentiation of diagnosis and treatment according to the patients practical situation,therefore to improve clinical effect.
