Objective:To evaluate the effect of quality of life (QOL) in patients with NSCLC after Complete video-assisted thoracoscopic Lobectomy. Methods:Forty patients who were diagnosed to non-small cell lung cancer at stageⅠ,Ⅱand some ofⅢA from August 2009 to June 2010 at the Thoracic Surgery department of Fu zhou General Hospital of Nanjing Military Command, were divided into VATS group (20cases) and traditional open surgery group (TOS) (20cases). Perioperative Period index includs the operation time, intraoperative blood loss, volume of drain and postoperative hospital stay were compared between two groups. Self-reported QOL was assessed using a Chinese version of functional assessment of cancer therapy-lung (FACT-L)and traditional chinese medicine symptoms classification of lung-cancer in these patients before,1 month and 6 months after the operation. FACT-L scales of physical well-being (PW), emotional well-being (EW), functional well-being (FW),social & family well-being (SFW), as well as lung cancer subscales(LCS) and traditional chinese medicine symptoms Score(TCS) were compared between the two groups. Results:All operations were completed under general anesthesia. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups of patients in gender, age, dia of tumor, tumor in lobes, Pathology categories,TNMand pre-operation QOL (P>0.05). In VATS group, beside the operation time(P>0.05), intraoperative bloodloss, volume of drain and postoperative hospital stay were all better than those in TOS group(P<0.05).1 month after operation, the main impacts on patient-reported scores were in SFW,EW,LCS and TCS for VATS(P<0.05) compared with PW,SFW,EW,FW,LCS and TCS for TOS(P<0.05).VATS was found to have less impacts on patient-reported scores of PW,EW,FW,LCS compared with TOS (P<0.05). There were no significant differences between the 2 groups of The score of SFW and TCS(P>0.05).6 months after operation, patient-reported scores of PW,SFW,FW,LCS and TCS were significantly higher than those before operation in VATS group(P<0.05) compared with LCS and TCS in TOS group (P<0.05). There were significant differences between the 2 groups of The score of PW,SFW,EW,FW,LCS and The score of TCS (P<0.05).Conclusions:Compared with TOS lobectomy, VATS leads to better QOL outcomes and Effectively lightens the symptoms correlated to therapy, improves quality of life.Indicated candidates may be greatly benefited from VATS.
