Schistosomiasis is one of zoonotic parasitic disease which is serious harm to human health. In China, Schistosomiasis is endemic in 12 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions mainly distributed along, and in the south of, the Yangtze River including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian. In recent years, with the development of geographic information system (GIS) and its related technology, GIS could be a new study method used in schistosomiasis research by providing geographic information. For a long time, many schistosomiasis epidemiological data is collected and saved by traditional forms which has less data capacity and is difficult to be consulted. Due to the lack of GIS data in national level,by constructing geographic information system database on schistosomiasis control, the national data can be effectively stored,inquired and analyzed. It also provides the basis to display and analyze data using GIS.In our study, for the first step, geographic information system database of schistosomiasis was constructed to achieve the modernization of data management, and to provide the basis of compatibility in data mining for further research. Second, basing on the GIS database of schistosomiasis, we conducted research on the atlas of national schistosomiasis control. Making 484 maps, including national schistosomiasis distribution map, snail area distribution map, national schistosomiasis surveillance point distribution map and so on. Two publishing model of atlas was explored, one is based in graphic system mode and the other in geographic information system mode. Comparing both advantages and disadvantages of these two models, we need to combine the advantages of both models to achieve the purpose of mapping and publishing. Third, we constructed an expression platform of national schistosomiasis surveillance point by using the KML language and its secondary development on digital earth platform, Google Earth. In the end, GIS database of schistosomiasis from 2002 to 2009 was used to detect and analyze the clusters of shistosomiasis in five lake provinces,i.e.,Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, and two moutainous regions, Sichuan and Yunnan. Moran'I of global spatial autocorrelation and Getis-Ord of local spatial autocorrelation were used to detect the schistosomiasis clusters based on GIS. The results showed that it had geographical distribution of clusters in five lake provinces from 2002 to 2009, mainly in the border of Hunan and Hubei Provinces and the areas around Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake, and in two mountainous provinces it does not have geographical distribution of clusters.
