Objective:The purpose of this study was to understand the maintenance hemodialysis(MHD) patients'present situation of self-management, to understand the MHD patients'depressed situation, o explore the correlation between the self-management behaviors and depression in MHD patients, in order to provides valuable theory basis and reference for the clinical targeted nursing interventions. Methods:A descriptive, correlative design was employed in this study. From September to November 2009,52 patients who received MHD treatment in the Department of Nephrology from the First Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were recruited to complete a series of questionnaires. In the course of the investigation, the general information questionnaire was applied to understand patients'demographic data, the year of dialysis, economic status, primary disease; etc. Self-Rating Depression Scale Social(SDS) was applied to investigate the depression status of MDH patients; Self-management behavior scale of MDH patients was applied to investigate the self-management level of patients. The SPSS 11.0 software was used for data analysis, by assessing the information having been collected the level of patients'self-management, depression conditions and their impact factors, as well as correlation between the self-management level of patients and depressed situation. were described.Result:In this survey,49 complete and effective questionnaires were taken back. 1. The incidence of the MHD patients'depression state is 61.2%. There were not significant statistical differences between depression group and the non-depression group in the aspects of gender, marital status, occupation, educational level, history of dialysis and primary disease of maintenance hemodialysis patients (P> 0.05). However, there were statistical differences in the aspects of age, family income each month and the proportion of reimbursement (P<0.05 or P<0.01).2. The average score of MHD patients'self-management behavior is 70 points. There were not significant statistical differences in age, marital status, occupation, the proportion of reimbursement and primary disease of maintenance hemodialysis patients'self-management (P> 0.05). However, there were statistical differences in the aspects of gender, educational level, family income each month, and history of dialysis (P<0.05 or P<0.01).3. The various factors'scores of MHD patients'self-control behaviors are as follows. The "restriction behavior of liquid and the ion" factor is 72.52 points, the "management behavior of diet amount" factor is 64.32 points, the "daily activities and hobbies" factor is 63.65 points, the "condition monitor and the psychological adjustment behavior" factor is 76.24 points.4. Correlation studies showed that it was a negative correlation between depression and total score of self-management behavior in patients, the daily activities and hobbies, the condition monitoring of behavior and the psychological adjustment (P<0.01). However, there is no relevance between depression and restriction behavior of liquid and ion, management behavior of diet amount (P>0.05)Conclusions:1. The incidence of MHD patients'depression is much higher than general population.2. The general level of self-management in MHD patients is at a medium level.3. It is imbalance among all the factors of self-management behaviors. Among these factors, "Restriction behavior of liquid and ion" and "Behavior of disease surveillance and psychological adjustment" showed high level, while "Management behavior of diet amount" and "Daily activities and hobbies" were at low level.4. The more severe the depressive symptoms, the worse patients' self-management behaviors. In addition, depression affects their daily activities, disease surveillance, psychological adjustment and so on especially.
