Research BackgroundAs the human being got into the 20th century, the average life span of human have gotten an increasingly extension. However the life and health of human being has been threaten seriously by a variety of diseases, especially various chronic diseases. Currently the global problem of aging population has become more serious and one third of global countries and regions been into aging societies. China has been into the aging society in the early 1980s and witnessed rapidly growing elderly population and more serious problem of aging of the aged. Healthcare for the elderly has become a major social problem. With thousands of years of accumulated experiences, the Chinese traditional medicine has many advantages and become an important research focus and research means of the global investigation on elderly chronic diseases. How to introduce Chinese medicine in community health services to make full use of resources advantages, implement the rational and efficient resources allocation and improve the service quality of the health maintain of elderly population, should be studied in depth. This article made the investigation and analysis on the community elderly population in Qingshan District of Baotou City in the hope of providing certain information and evidence for subsequent relative researches.ObjectivesThe research purpose of this thesis is to investigate the distribution status of chronic diseases of the elderly lived in the district and corresponding treatment preferences. Based on the investigation of the communities'elderly population in Qingshan District of Baotou City, the article described and analyzed the health service demands of older people and the current situation of medical services. On the analysis of the investigation this article presented related medical and health service model for the development of community health services in the hope of providing reference for the construction of communities' health services, the exploration of medical resources advantages and the improvement of communities' medical and health services.Research MethodsBased on the study design, from September to November in 2009 we issued the questionnaires and collected the data on the elder population with chronic diseases in 4 communities in Qingshan District, Baotou City. The main research items included general information, living conditions, economic conditions and medical insurance status, family monthly income per capita, self-assessment hobbies and social activities, illness conditions, the illness severity of self-evaluation, treatment options etc. Through statistical data arrangement, this article investigated the medical care and health conditions of the elders in Qingshan District and the utilization conditions of Chinese medicine, and then evaluated the supply and demand situation of the medical and health resources in communities' health care institutions and the demand condition of elderly group on Chinese medicine.Main Results1. Six chronic diseases of the elderly population are:circulatory diseases, muscle, bone and connective tissue diseases, digestive diseases, endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases and immune diseases, respiratory diseases, urinary and reproductive diseases.2. The total of 781 elderly (60 and older) were surveyed, males are 332 accounting for 87.9% and females are 449 for 89.5%. The minimum age is 60 years old and the maximum is 89, and the average age is 73.7 years old.3. In the multivariate analysis on a variety of chronic diseases, in 781 elderly people surveyed 684 were suffering from varying degrees of chronic diseases and the prevalence is 87.6%. of which. The male average prevalence rate is 38.62% and the female one is 44.17%. In multivariate analysis, prevalence of male and female chronic disease presented a difference in statistical significance.4. Statistically significant individual factors to the health conditions of self-evaluation are:education, economic and living conditions, medical expenses reimbursement form, drinking or not, regular physical exercise or not and age. Statistically insignificant individual factors to the health conditions of self-evaluation are:sex, marital status, occupation, smoking or not and social activities participating. In multivariate Logistic regression analysis statistically significant individual factors to the health conditions of self-evaluation are:economic and living conditions, medical expenses reimbursement form, drinking or not, regular physical exercise or not and age.5. More elder people in Qingshan District have the preferences of Chinese medicine in chronic medical treatment and most of them consider that Chinese medicine has little side effects compared with Western medicine and that its effect is relatively obvious.ConclusionBased on the actual situation of the aging population in Qingshan District, this thesis combined communities'health services and Chinese medicine practices to investigate the medical care and health conditions of the elders in the communities. This article presented the status of elderly chronic disease and treatment preferences and then, based on the above data, drew the following conclusions:the prevalence of elderly chronic diseases in communities is comparatively high and the preference to traditional Chinese medicine as the treatment of choice can be observed.SuggestionThrough the utilization of advanced Western technologies and equipments, traditional Chinese medicine should also play a more important role in the maintenance of the elderly health groups to accomplish the development of both Chinese and Western Medicine and comprehensively improve the life quality of older people to help them to enjoy a sense of security and get appropriate medical care. As the investigation to solve the real problems that the elder residents got little access to medical care, this article some reference on the improvement of community health services, the promotion of communities" Chinese medical and health services and the resolution of the elderly population health issues and social issues.
