Objective:Neurogenic tumors are commonly found in the mediastinum, especially in the posterior mediastinum, and have a variety of histological and clinical features. We reviewed our experience with these types of tumors and assessed diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.Method:A series of 64 patients with tumors in the posterior mediastinum, all seen in Shan dong provincial hospital from July 2003 to October 2010, were retrospectively reviewed. We mainly study 49 neurogenic tumors about pathology, clinical manifestation and treatment.Result:Between July 2003 and October 2010,64 patients with tumors in the posterior mediastinum were seen. There are 49 neurogenic tumors, accounting for 76.6%, while 15 are other types. The mean age of the 49 patients with neurogenic tumors is 42.6 years, including 29 males and 20 females. Of the 49 patients with neurogenic tumors, there are 38 with benign nerve sheath derived tumors.accounting for 77.6%,6 with active or malignant tumors,5 with ganglioneuroma.22 patients with neurogenic tumors are asymptomatic, accounting for 44.9%, while the other 27 patients with neurogenic tumors are symptomatic, such as dyspnea, fever, chest pain, cough, dysphagia and so on.The operative procedure was performed in 46 cases, including 12 video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and 34 thoracotomy, while 3 cases were not operated, including 2 cases with nerofibromatosis and 1 case considered maliganant. There are 3 postoperative complications including Honor symptom, chylothorax and esophagus damage. Conclusions:the neurogenic tumor is the most common disease in posterior mediastinum. The major histological type is nerve sheath tumor, nealy half of neurogenic tumors are asymptomatic. The surgery is the most common therapeutic approaches, and whether VATS or thoracotomy is determined by the different situations...
