From high cost and low efficiency of manual meter reading to the high accuracy, low cost and high efficiency automatic meter reading, the AMR system has experienced several generations changes. Druing this process, the technology is the most important factors. The new technology brings about great change in people's way of life. Using the new ZigBee and GPRS technology, this paper designs and realizate a new low cost,high efficiency and more intelligent automatic meter reading system. Compared with the previous meter reading system, this system performs much better in security and reliability.we analyse the current situation and technology in meter reading,and introduce the shortness and goodness of power line commucation,RS-485bus and wireless meter reading. And get the answer that ZigBee and GPRS technology has advantage in AMR system.The ZigBee dynamic routing technology and Ad hoc network technology make sure the network's reliability and flexibility. The heartbeat packet technology let this system always online.And when we design this system, the communication protocol is designed based on DLT645-2007protocol. So this system gets high compatibility.At the same time, we pay much attention on the system of EMC/EMI ability. All the hardware circuit has done protection measures, such as dual power management circuit filter to suppress the conducted interference, the RS-485bus power supply isolated from others and the external interface has added the transient absorption circuit. And in the software, once the process finds out electric drop off, the system immediately began to data backup.In the later testing period, we use the Sensor Monitor and SmartRF Studio7.0softwre provided by TI to do transmission distance and bit error test. The test result shows that ZigBee nodes can establish a Mesh network very efficient and fast in a laboratory environment.
