To detect whether the axes of two connected shafts are on the same line is very important in the assemblage and maintenance of mechanical equipment. The accuracy of the shafts connection can ensure the normal operation, reduce the impact force and extend the life of equipments. A good situation of alignment can also improve production efficiency. The traditional alignment method is both time consuming and labor consuming, and the accuracy is poor. The laser alignment technology can slove those problems.Laser alignment instrument is the best alignment instrument at current time. There are many foreign laser alignment manufacturers, and their products work well in industrial test. The research on laser alignment in our country started relatively late, and no product have been released yet. The core components of laser alignment instrument are laser diode (LD) and position sensitive detector (PSD). A single chip system with computer-human interface can be used to process the main arithmetic to analyze the alignment situation of shafts. The alignment condition can be displayed to help operators complete the adjustment task.The purpose of the thesis is to clarify the foundation for laser alignment products. Firstly, this thesis reviews the research on LD and PSD. Secondly, the principles of different measuring methods of laser alignment instruments have been analyzed. Thirdly, two kinds of alignment models have been established, one is based on single LD-PSD, and the other is on double LD-PSD. Lastly, an experimental system has been set up, and the single LD-PSD model has been tested and anlyzed.
