By updating and transformation process, a city can break through development bottleneck, opening up new space for development, therefore maintaining its vitality. The research on urban regeneration become in-depth with the massive urban renewal process. By a review of the urban regeneration theory and practice in both domestic and international background, this paper summarized the three major trends of the modern urban regeneration:the multi-dimensional perspective, the diversity of the goals, and the dual-way characteristic in terms of the method. Upon such a basic understanding, by an application and reference of the "city weaving" idea, the author proposed three main findings of this paper. Firstly, urban regeneration should adapt a multi-dimensional perspective, considering the dual dimension of both time and space, taking care of the relationship among the future, past, and present of this particular city, and also taking care of the relationship among the renewed urban quarter with its surrounding area and even the whole city. Secondly, a urban regeneration project should set a synthesized goal including the economic, social, ecological, and spatial dimensions, and point out explicitly the intercrossing and progressive relationship between different targets. Most importantly, the designer should keep in mind that the economic, social, ecological and other goals need to be translated into spatial objectives then would finally be able to be implemented. Last but not least, the dual-way of the combination of urban planning and urban design is the method to solve the problems in urban regeneration in a comprehensive approach. It is also the expression of the multi-dimensional perspective, and the mean to achieve the diversity goals. Finally, to illustrate the arguments above, the paper explored a case study of the regeneration process in the old railway district in Jiangshan city in great depth, and explain the three arguments in detail.
