Renovation Strategy Study On Xiagang Sheltered Dock Industrial Area

Xiagang Area used to be the prosperous urban center of Xiamen city. However, it had unavoidably declined because of urban center transition and industrial structure adjustment. Xiamen government has started a redevelopment project in order to revitalize the area. In addition, the Sheltered Dock Industrial Area is located at the center of Xiagang Area.This paper tries to study and explore new strategies for Sheltered Dock Industrial Area redevelopment. By probing into this unique case, we hope to find a way to preserve the historic memory of the area. We try to avoid tearing everything down without questioning, which is the method adopted by most redevelopment projects in China.This paper first studies successful harbor redevelopment projects abroad as references preparation; then analyzes the redevelopment background and urban space of the Sheltered Dock Industrial Area in great detail. In the end, the paper brings up detailed renovation strategies from three aspects:preservation of historic memory; creation of water-enjoyable-space; building of a mixed community. Moreover, we did a study on the renovation process, so as to offer practical reference for future planning and design.
