Social progress and economic development promote the rapid development of the packaging industry, but also bring a series of side effects; especially the environmental pollution caused by the packaging and the waste of resources is the problem that we can't neglect. With the green packaging design concept proposed, the user-friendly packaging developing, enterprise competition combined and the psychological changing of customer purchase, continuous improvement and innovation will be the needs of the development of the packaging in the new period. Aiming at resolving the problems that occurred in the packaging development process, this paper puts forward the proposition of extensions of the packaging design, and hope the research on it can bring greater benefits for the community, businesses and consumers.The research on extensions of the packaging design is, from the perspective of graphic design, to explore the new function and incorporate it into the design; diversify the functionality of the packaging and reuse it after one time use. The package, with the extensions, can reflect the uniqueness of the packaging, meet the demand of the brands competing and the customer psychological needs, and finally reach the communication of people and goods; At the same times, it can relief the packaging pollution to the environment and the waste of resources, and promote the healthy development of the packaging, and point out the new direction of innovations of the packaging design.As the proposition, firstly, the article analyze social background, the packaging trends, business needs, consumer purchasing behavior and psychology, affirm the importance of extensions of the packaging design, and provide a theoretical basis for the research value; Secondly, this paper gradually elaborate the concept from the packaging design to the extension and then to extensions of the packaging design; Thirdly, through the survey of the domestic packaging with extensions, and the comparison of the outstanding foreign ones, summarize many issues of extensions of the packaging design; Lastly, based on it and the solution of the outstanding foreign cases, this paper raise the concrete representation of the packaging from the three levels-modeling structure, materials, visual elements; verify its feasibility by the actual design cases; and summary the realistic meaning of propositions, which contributes to the improvement and innovation of the package, and provide theoretic basis and method for it.
