The thesis in question is a constituent of the research project entitled Residential Architectural Design, the Hui-style Architectural Art, and the Hui Merchants. Its conception is built after neo-Hui style public environmental art, with an effort to abstract the system of the neo-Hui style public environmental design, thus providing a model for following neo-Hui style public environmental architectural design. An additional analysis will be done regarding the social and cultural settings contributing to the development of neo-Hui style public environmental architectural design in current society, drawing a difference from the traditional Hui- style residential architectural design.Apart from those well-preserved ancient dwellings in the old Hui district, the current local architectural complex and infrastructure are hard to suffice. And a multitude of modeled traditional Hui-style architectures have brought a negative impact on the traditional Hui-style architectural culture. Thus it turns to be extremely important to protect those intact architectural heritages, to make a good preservation of Chinese traditional civilization, to fuse with modern design features and to create novel Hui-style public environmental architectural pieces. So, how the neo-Hui style architectural design is to develop and how the valuable Hui-style architectural heritages can be handed down will be in the discussion of this thesis. The neo-Hui style architectural environmental design gains its background on traditional Hui architectural cultures, so we should take into account the cultural elements of the architectural sites. A piece of design should be consistent with the local architectural history and geography, in which way can the works be created with distinction, rather than simply modeling pieces. Through proper variation, the Hui-style elements will be identified, sorted, analyzed first, and then extracted, transformed, restructured and applied, ultimately to reflect the quality of neo-Hui style architectures. The thesis will be focused on two points:the first is, whether neo-Hui style public environmental design means to simply attach Hui-style features, say, horse-head--like wall, to any piece of architecture at any space, which then be classified as Hui-style architecture? The second is that many designers could not treat the border between traditional culture and modern design properly, lacking in deep understanding of traditional Hui culture but unwilling to take further studies, which result in a large amount of coarse modeling with modern architectural material, yet ignorant of space environment treatment. This thesis not only discusses the formation of residential architectures in old Hui district, its settings, and modern neo-Hui style environmental art design, but also makes a complete and accurate description of the social conditions, ideological conditions and cultural conditions accounting for current neo-Hui style decorative features, in an attempt to generalize the features of the thinking modes which support neo-Hui style environmental art design, hence providing feasible ideas for future designs. The thesis adopts a synthetic and holistic approach in dealing with the traditional Hui-style and modern environmental art design analysis, investigates the aesthetic features in traditional Hui-style architectures through a large number of cases, and finally, based on theoretical materials and living examples, makes a generalization of the conceptions in Hui-style public environmental architectural design system, which is then confirmed by live photos.
