Reactive compensation could improve stabilization and capability of transmission system and restrain the over-voltage of power system. Therefore, the design of new equipment for reactive compensation is an important task in the field of power system. Magnetic valve controllable reactor is a new-type equipment for reactive power compensation, which could change field current and magnetic saturation by changing the trigger angle of thyristor. Therefore, it could reach the aim of adjusting smoothly the reactive capacity of the whole reactor. The controllable reactor with a approximate linear volt-ampere characteristic and little harmonic waves is the best choice of grid for voltage regulation and reactive power compensation.Firstly, this thesis briefly introduced the current situation and future prospect of magnetic valve controllable reactor and points out the advantage of magnetic valve controllable reactor compared with the other reactive compensation equipment. Furthermore, it detailedly described the basic structure and operating principle of the magnetic valve controllable reactor and analysed the conversion conditions and process of working situation. Simplified mathematic model of magnetic valve controllable reactor has been made.Secondly, this thesis shows the design formula of magnetic valve controllable reactor, including the calculation of diameter and the cross-sectional area of iron core, winding, magnetic valve structure, winding tap, the loss of reactor, temperature-rise and the inductance, etc. The flow chart has been drawn on the basis of these formulas, computer-aided design system for magnetic valve controllable reactor, has been programmed by Visual Basic.Finally, taking 5kVA, 220V magnetic valve controllable reactor for an example, the magnetic valve controllable reactor computer-aided design system calculates the theoretical parameter values and makes prototype. On the basis of above, experiment system has been designed. It could prove the characteristic of reactor and detect the difference between practice and theory.Research results and conclusions will be introduced as follow. It can be seen that the magnetic valve controllable reactor is continuously adjustable by measuring the current waveform of the reactor and thyristor trigger waveforms. At the same time, it can be seen that the reactor current and triggering angle is nonlinear by measuring the current value of the reactor and the corresponding angle of thyristor triggering angle, similar to the cosine, fully in line with the theoretical analysis.
