Clock synchronization technology can provide an accurate time reference to the numerous intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), which are widely distributed in the power system, and therefore plays a significant role in real time monitoring, network management and safety protection in the grid. The Ethernet/IP based IEEE 1588 precise time protocol (PTP) is considered to be the most prospective solution to the smart grid for its high performance of clock synchronization accuracy. This paper focuses on the typical implementation in the micro-grid. Main contributions of this paper are summarized as follows:1. The model of the ordinary clock and E2E transparent clock are built as PTP standard specified. Based on the OMNeT++ simulation platform, all the modules in the model are elaborately organized and designed. A typical oscillator clock model is adopted as local time source within the PTP node. The clock servo system is proposed to control the oscillator clock, including the clock time error correction and the self-calibration algorithm based frequency skew adjustment.2. The E2E clock synchronization mechanism is simulated. The complete clock synchronization process and its performance in different scenarios are analyzed and evaluated. Factors such as clock frequency skew and delay asymmetry could impact the synchronization performance.3. Based on the information model and the demand of clock synchronization within the micro-grid, the typical PTP network is organized. In the complex condition, the E2E transparent clock can eliminate the impact of the network asymmetry delay and keep the performance of clock synchronization.By means of modeling and simulation, the paper shows that PTP clock synchronization has the ability to achieve the desire performance and reduce the phase errors in the micro-grid.
