In recent years, the electric power industry is growing rapidly. Automation and extra-high voltage are the most important features of the modern electric power industry. The transmission network is inter-connected and extra-high voltage with AC/DC mixed transmission network bulk power system has been broadly built. More and more non-linear power equipments are installed, introducing large amount of harmonic into the electric power network. Because of them, the topology of electric power industry is becoming more and more complex and measurement in wide area is necessary for the electric power industry. The effectiveness of measurement largely depends on the standard clock. So, how to build a clock synchronization system is very important for electric power industry.This project aims at designing a clock synchronization system in wide area which can be implemented in the electric power industry. Based on the state-of-art analysis in this field, the author of this thesis proposed a new solution of clock synchronization which is based on GPS and IEEE1588 protocol. The solution is implemented with FPGA and adopts to the synchro-phasor measurement technique, making all nodes of the implemented system synchronize to a standard clock.The measurement system in the electric power industry has two important features which are distribution in wide area and demanding precise clock synchronization. According to the distribution in geography of the measurement system, the whole measurement network is divided into some sub-net. In every sub-net, IEEE1588 protocol is applied. Between the sub-nets, GPS tine module is used. Then, the clock synchronization is implemented in the whole network. This paper firstly introduces the clock synchronization technology in the measurement system of the electric power industry. And then, the structure the new clock synchronization system is elaborated, as will as the designing with Verilog HDL. At last, the error is analyzed in this paper.
