Container terminal is the important note to connect a variety of container transportation. Its operation performance has an important effect on the efficiency of container transportation, and the efficiency of entire system is subject to its capacity of loading and unloading. The study on automation, intelligent and high-efficiency of container terminal to improve its efficiency, thereby to enhance the ability of the entire container transportation system is very necessary. This paper studies a new type of container handling system with two issues: system layout of equipments and container operations scheduling research. Firstly, the devices layout problem is focused on the station optimization of container lift for the characteristics of loading and unloading process, addressing tabu search based on genetic algorithm. By comparing with the lower bounds, the numerical experiments prove the algorithm effective and efficient. Secondly, based on the characteristics of such system, the container handling scheduling problem is defined as a three-stage flexible Job Shop scheduling problem with the objective of makespan minimization. A heuristic algorithm is developed with intermediate DV as its dispatch center to solve the three-stage integrated scheduling problem. The computational experiments show that the proposed algorithm is effective and efficient in solving the large-scale problem, comparing single loading operation and single unloading operation with mixed handling modes.Furthermore, the equipment layout of the system should be realized through coordinating operation modes and all devices layout matching their capacity, to improve the operating efficiency of the container handling system.
