Study On Residential Behavior Of Source Separation Of Household Waste In Shihezi

Objective: To investigate and analyze the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of Shihezi residents concerning the source separation of household waste so as to detect the factors that affect waste separation. Feasible suggestions have been made as reference for the government to formulate policies and plans to classify and separate household waste.Method: Stratified random sampling has been employed to conduct a questionnaire for 1,050 Shihezi residents and an open interview conducted with the executives of the Environmental Sanitation Department. SPSS 13.0 version is used to process the data and information gained; Descriptive statistical analysis, Chi-square test, logistic regression linear correlation and multiple linear stepwise regressions are used.Results: 1. the awareness rate of the source separation of household waste is 85.5%, its accuracy being 69.0% and actual knowledge being 59.0%2.77.2% of the respondents thinks that the source separation of household waste is an environment-friendly behavior and should be practiced from everyone.46.6% of the respondents acknowledge the gravity of the environmental problem caused by household waste in Shihezi.92.6% of them consider it necessary to implement the source separation of household waste in Shihezi.94.7% of the interviewees express their willingness to participate in the source separation of household waste.3. Multiple stepwise regression analysis shows that knowledge, awareness and age variables enter the regression model (adj R2=0.154), regression test is statistically significant (P=0.00).Conclusion: The results show that knowledge of the source separation of household waste characterized by high awareness and low accuracy. Residents think that the problem of household waste is very serious and it is necessary to implement the source separation of household waste. In the meantime the residents believe that individuals have greater responsibility, and are willing to participate in the source separation of household waste. Knowledge and awareness of the source separation of household waste and sale of waste materials are factors affecting the behavior of the source separation of household waste.
