The High Line is considered as a significant case for studying the contemporary landscape planning of the United States. As a non-traditional park, The High Line has a wide range of traits, including planning design, theoretical basis and operational management. Hence, to explore and study the planning design, theoretical basis and operational management of The High Line and then take advantage of the experiences of The High Line based on Chinese situation embodies great significance for the development of the Chinese current urban construction and the Chinese landscape development during the social transition.For a start, the paper studies the landscape planning which has been formed since 1858, outlines the American urban development that influences the American landscape planning directly and indirectly, and then clarifies the social background of the generation and evolution of the American landscape planning ideas; based on the study, the paper is to explore the main idea and evolving process of the American landscape planning from 1858 from the macro perspective, comb out the ideas of the development and evolution of the American landscape planning, attach more attention to studying the ecological thoughts which pose greater influence on modern landscape planning and developing ideas and connotation of the landscape urbanism, so that based on the study of historical outline, design teams, design notions and successful operational management of the park, the author can analyze the inner relationship between the park and its theoretical basis——the landscape urbanism; at last, the paper summarizes the concrete practice and the theoretical basis——the landscape urbanism based on the Chinese current urban construction and the Chinese current landscape development, sheds light on the Chinese urban construction and Chinese landscape development and generalizes the future study of the field.
