Shanghai Suburbs Development Research

Since the 1950s,most international metropolises, in order to improve the integral function of the town and to adjust its spatial structure from monocentric model to polycentric model,have taken construction of the new town as an important strategy of town development. Shanghai goes without Exception.It has issued a series of urban plans to develop suburban new town.While Shanghai keeps its huge inertia to traditional urban center. The sprawl of central zone based on the concentric circle pattern is unchecked.The thesis concerns the problems about the development of new town in Shanghai suburb and explored "why develop,how to develop and how to ensure the development"with an aim at the topic of "New Town Develop-Ment in Shanghai Suburb"By analysis on the present situation of central zone and the development trend of Shanghai urban areas and comparison with main international metropolises in the world, this thesis first indicates the necessary of new town construction in Shanghai suburb.Then it reviews the history of new town construction in Shanghai suburb. Next this thesis analyzes some main reasons for the existing trend of high quantity but low quality in Shanghai's suburbs new town construction,and carries out an in-depth case study on the urbanization of Songjiang New Town.Finally, following the analyzing and summing up some international metropolises theory and practice about the development of new town, the thesis, this thesis suggests a strategy system to fulfill this task from the aspects of both urban resource exploitation and social development.
