This paper discusses the operating principle of the main circuit,as well as the excitation/de-excitation circuit, and the regulator of the self-exitation system of synchronous generator associating with the Unit 4 in Huanren PowerPlant. Since the original units in the old-fashioned have a series of drawbacks, such as low performances, less functions and high fault probability in operation, this paper presents a scheme to improve making the self-excitation system of a 10MW hydro-generating unit by using the PLC control technique. The results show that the improved self-excitation system has satisfactory performances, such as more functions, low fault probability and more operational.
