With the rapid development of electric power system, power system dynamic performance of the operation, security and stability and the improvement of the economy has become the important problem of power system operation, generator excitation system is one of to improve the most effective and economic means. Generator excitation system as an important component of the generator which is to provide generator of current device, magnetic field static stability ability, improve generator improve dynamic stability ability, calm generator oscillation, control of reactive power distribution condensing units, maintain generator voltage level, play a very important role In the past, control systems rely on a large number of relevant hardware, which is very complicated, difficult to realize and unreliable. Recently, the microprocessor technology have made a great progress and is embeded in the excitation regulators, which can meet the complex requirements better of the excitation system.This paper aimed at 3# turbo generator unit in power factory of Jilin petrochemical company, in which the old excitation system showed too many defects such as swinging frequently without work, badly worn of commentator, slow response of the adjustment, and many faults in its operation, etc. This paper focused on the reform design of turbo generator based on shunt self excitation system. It included the design of major loop, field flashing process and field suppression process of the shunt self excitation system. The control methods of the excitation regulator was also discussed. Industrial applications in 60 MW turbo generator demonstrated the above design is successful. After comparison, the shunt self excitation system have the advantages of higher reliability, stability improvement of Shaft generator, and economical efficiency.
