Optimal and parametric system design of machines is a very important development direction in the field of mechanical design. The part models and assembly models can be quickly developed after the optimal parameters are obtained through establishing the optimal model of a product and optimizing its structure. It will not only shorten product development cycles, but also can reduce production costs and improve product competitiveness in the market. Therefore, the optimal design and parametric design are very important for the development of future products.Gear reducer is an important mechanical and electrical product. However, only some particular types are studied in the traditional design, which is unsuitable for most situations. To make up for the defect of this method and improve the efficiency of product design and production, gear reducer was selected as the study object in this paper. The volume parameters of gear reducers were optimized by using genetic algorithm toolbox of MATLAB, and a parametric system was developed by using parametric modeling and secondary development kit of UG. During the optimal design, this paper combined fuzzy optimal design and reliability optimal design, minimized the volume of gear reducer as the design goal, and obtained the optimal parameters by using genetic algorithm toolbox of MATLAB. During the parametric design, firstly, parametric part models and assembly models of gear reducer were gotten by using the expression function and WAVE of UG, and the tooth profile under the various circumstances and the methods of building parametric assembly models were also discussed. Secondly, parametric system of gear reducers was studied using the secondary development of UG, the interface between UG and VC++, and Access database. At last, a modularized system of some main components of gear reducers was developed, and the relevant three-dimensional parametric model of gear reducers can be quickly obtained by this system.
