The subgrade would guarantee the train being drived safely and smoothly. The railway and highway subgrade has to be with the high strength and the strong durability and the better steability. It also can resist the settlement deformation in all influences. The highway constructured across the red mudstone area is unavoidable with the high speed development of the infrastructure. There is much red mudstone enev red sandstone distributed in Sichuan province, which is easy to crumble and soften. It also has the certain expansibility. Therefore, it is nessary to assess the engeering charater of the red mudstone used as the subgrade.The thesis firstly researched the distribution of the Sichuan red mudstone. Then, the Sichuan red mudstone is divided into the Sichuan basin area and the western Panzhihua area by the geographical area. The distributed character of the Sichuan red mudstone can be divided into the eastern area and the middle area and the northwestern area. The distribution of the Sichuan red mudstone can be obtained and the petrofabric area of the red mudstone can be count by the analysis of the geologic historical background and the typical petrofabric characters.The thesis gets the mineral and chemical content after analysing the mineral and chemical composition. This thesis also describes the engeering environmental character and the climatic characteristics and the hydrogeology character and the landform character in Sichuan red mudstone area. At last, the expansibility and disintegrative even the softening can be recognized after the red mudstone acts with the water.The red mudstone is a kind of the soft rock and its engineering character will directly influence the stability of the red mudstone being the subgrade. The relationship of the red mudstone among the optimum water content and maximum dry density and CBR value can be obtain. The strength parameters can be got in different compactness and confining pressure by triaxial test. Then the strength of the redmudstone has been analysed.Finally, the test datas of the red mudstone has been analysized and the rating standard of C grade filling has been gevn. The red mudstone will be classified by that standard and then discus wheather it can be used as the subgrade filling. All what has been done will supply the certain basis for the future rating standard of the Sichuan red mudstone area.
