PELE,which is short for Penetrator with Enhanced Lateral Effect, is a kind of new ammunition, which has the functions of armor perforation and chip damage effect behind target, without reactive materials and fuze. It consists of two materials with different density. The jacket is made of high-density materials, such as steel and tungsten. Meanwhile, the filling is a low-density material, like aluminium and plastic. Therefore, PELE is the inert projectile.The penetrative performance of the jacket is better than that of the filling because of the kinetic energy of jacket is more than that of the filling. When PELE impacts the target, the filling is compressed between the rear part of the jacket and the crater of target. The jacket is dilated by this pressure in the filling. As soon as PELE perforats the target, stresses in the jacket is unloaded and the jacket is broken into pieces in radial direction.,The mechanisms of PELE perforating into the thin metal target is studied by using theoretical analysis, numerical simulations and experimental researches. Meanwile, the factors that take an important part on the lateral efficiency of PELE are presented.The best range of the key factors are abtained. All the above results give a theoretic foundation and technical support for the design of PELE. The main contents of this paper are as follows:(1) The theoretical model of PELE penetrating into a thin target is established. The relation between the lateral effect and the factors of PELE is calculated. Meanwhile, the experiments of PELE impacting thin target are carried out, and the experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical model. To research the lateral effect in detail, the numeriacal simulation of PELE perforating the target is established.(2) The influence of the factors of PELE on lateral effect is researched. The results of the research obtained are as follows. Firstly, when the ratio of inner diameter to outer diameter is increasing, the lateral effect of PELE is enhanced. Secondly, the compressive resistance and Poisson's ratio of the filling materials should be increased to get a better lateral effect. Thirdly, when the impact velocity increases, the radial velocity augments gradually. Fourthly, the radial velocity of fragments increases as the density and elastic module of target increase, meanwile, the lateral effect is better with the increasing of the thickness of the taget.And lastly, PELE without cap is of a good performance on lateral effect.(3) The experimental method of collecting debris is prentended. The mass distribution of fragments is obtained from the experiments. At last, the phenomenon of the second fragmentation is found.
