The iron and steel industry is the pillar of China's national economy industries. The medium and heavy plate production in the iron and steel industry plays a very important role. The gauge accuracy, which is the basis of dimensional accuracy and the intrinsic quality such as width and shape, is an important indicator of quality. Therefore, it is significant to research the model and improve the controlling level and accuracy of the AGC system of plate mill. The implement of automatic rolling is the foundation of regulating, optimizing and stability in rolling process. Furthermore it can make the whole process controll and guarantee the product dimensional accuracy and performance.Based on the design and the application of the finishing automatic system in a domestic 3500mm plate mill and the related documents in home and abroad, the model of the plate mill AGC and automatic rolling were researched. The industrial applications prove that the performance of the finishing automatic system is very excellent. The main contents and the research conclusions of this article as follows:First of all, the model of the AGC was analyzed and compared, for instance, the all kinds of the pressure AGC, the feed-forward AGC and the feedback AGC. The AGC compensation method was researched in detail, such as the head/tail compensation, the film thickness compensation, bite impact compensation, roll eccentricity compensation, which has formed the theoretic foundation of the high-accuracy mill AGC model and its application.During the design of the AGC system, the hardware and network configuration in the system of the plate mill AGC was described in detail at first. The EAPC, HAPC and the gap setting logic of the electro-hydraulic, the automatic zeroing, the stiffness testing and the hydraulic bending roll were researched in detail. According to the features of the plate mill AGC system, the relative and absolute AGC combination mode has been selected in order to obtain a good thickness and performance of plate.Rolling tracking is the basis for the realization of automatic rolling. The different calculation model was triggered by different signals of traking. The tracking system includes both macro-tracking and micro-tracking systems. In this paper, the macro-tracking and the micro-tracking systems in rolling area was researched respectively. Especially, the models and the algorithm ware designed, such as the tracking regional dividing model, judging model and the micro-tracking modify model. It can provide trigger signals to the automatically rolling. The software and the communicating of the tracking system ware also researched in detail in this paper.The automatic rolling system includes the coordination automatic control in horizon and vertical direction. The automatic of the manipulator, mill and the table speed exchange were designed after the research of the core functions of the automatic rolling, such as the table control, the pass number control, the host speed control and the temperature control. Furthermore, this design was applied in this finishing system successfully. So, the level of the automatic in production lines and product precision was enhanced.The results of the finishing automatic control system application were measured and analysis at the end of this paper. Particularly, the adaptive compensation method of the head thickness was illustrated in details. The measured data such as the thickness accuracy and the crown was analyzed and compared. The results illustrated that both the thickness accuracy and the crown are meet the contract requirements when the designed model was being applied. Thus, the model and system in this artice is significance for the design and application of the plate mill automation system.
