There is a typical way to do tourism development for historical ancient towns in Yunnan Province. Private and commercialized investments are allowed and welcomed to develop local tourism resources, which results in increased employment rate and improved living standards in those areas. While commercialized development of tourism in ancient towns brings in economic benefits, side effects of these activities are also introduced due to a lack of theoretical proactive study in this area and involvement of some shortsighted developers. Negative impacts from tourism development make ancient towns losing their advantages and authenticity on many valuable resources such like disappearance of many historical relics. Meanwhile, it causes social, cultural, and environmental problems at some extent to residents, local governments and business. Conservation and development on historical ancient towns are attracting more attentions from governments and industries at all level. We use a real example from the Town of Heshun in Tengchong County, historically known as the Hometown of Overseas Chinese in Yunnan Province, to retrospect lessens learnt from past experience, analyze existing issues, and summarize strategies for future development.
