| Project management as a systematic and scientific method dated back to 1958. In the past of half century, the technology of project management is applied not only in the field of engineer, but also in software development, aerospace, national defense, finance etc., while we are rejoiced for the improvement of the traditional management's disadvantage brought by the use of project management, the shadows accompanied by the failure still disturb us, especially in the realm of software develop. According to the report from the Standish Group, the success rate of the American IT project still maintain below 30%, and this figure are even lower in china.Since they suffer a great failure, there must be some common factors that led to an unsuccessful project. On this point, different specialists and experts hold different opinions. They usually treat this problem from the obverse point and always refer the cause of failure as poor project manager, poor plan, poor execute, poor project team and so on. While there are no papers that systematically explain the most key failure reasons based on the China software industrial. Another question is that when we talk about the failure of software, we have no clear success criteria, which will cause confusion whether the project is success or not.This paper tries to treat the same problem with different method;First we give the criteria of a failure project based on the research of the definition of success, and extracted five major factors that contribute to the failure on the basis of the related literature, then establish the model on software failure;second, we collect the data via questionnaires and have interviews with project managers;third use the Structural Equation Model to analyses those data, and draw conclusions. At last, we give summary of which are the most important factors that contribute to the failure, and also give some suggestions to avoid the failure of software project. |
