| For current IT companies, how to meet customer expectation and how to improve product quality is one of key factors to be successful under hot competition. In the past years, IT industry is converting from traditional PC industry to Mobile Internet Business, which means the competition is becoming hotter and hotter, and more frequently the new products need to be developed and launched to market. In the area of mobile phone and tablet, iOS and Android system are fighting for long time, and without a breakthrough product showing up, the war will be continued. The customers are picky now, therefore, who can develop new product faster with better quality, who will win the war.More challenging thing is, most of the IT company like Apple, has outsourced the production to OEM/EMS, even has very close co-development on new product design. However, how to design together with OEM and how to control the quality during development phase? It is big question mark to everyone.With years of working experience on Apple projects development, I am familiar with Apple’s requirement on quality control system as well as new product development process. Apple did achieve good reputation and reality on product quality control. However, several quality issues happened on iPhone and iPad in the past few years, such as iPad "Light Leakage", iPhone "Cosmetic defect" and "Antenna signal lost", it reminds me to study how this problem happened, and what is the root cause and how the company can do better to control the quality without escaping to market. I did some study to explore the answer, with the help from some tools like Fish-bone diagram to map out the root cause, then to figure out the corrective actions. To do such study on lesson learned is not only to have better understanding how’s improvements works to Apple, also benefits to other company in same industry. |
