The inter-symbol-interfere due to the inherent chromatic dispersion in fiber greatly restricts the transmission distance and capacity of optical fiber communication system. With the development of high speed electronic instrument, the researchers are attracted by the Electronic Dispersion Compensation because of its excellent performance and superiority in cost, especially Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE), it has become a research hotspot. But the high complexity of the algorithm and difficulty of implementation of high speed Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) are the two main obstacles of MLSE. The problems related to the implementation of ADC are discussed theoretically in this paper. The research works are as follows:The influence of the sampling speed and resolution in ADC on the performance of MLSE are researched in Matlab through building a Single-mode Fiber communication system model. Both the one sample per bit and twofold over sampling are researched, also the influence of sampling time jitter. The result shows twofold over sampling can overcome the sampling time jitter and makes the performance of MLSE be much stabler. Under two quantification models, the performances of 3bit ADC, 4bit ADC and 5bit are discussed in different distance. The result shows 4bit ADC can make a good balance among performance, distance and complexity. These researches are useful for the implementation of ADC in MLSE.
