Metamaterials as a novel kind of artificial electromagnetic materials, because of its unique physical properties, has become a current research focus of electromagnetics, physics, optics, material science and cross-disciplinary. Its research areas include Left Handed Transmission Line, Composite Right/Left Handed Transmission Lines, Negative Refraction Materials, Single-Negative Materials, EBG structures and Defected Ground Structures. The existing 2D metamaterials can be divided into two categories: transmission-line-type and (space-) resonance-type. In contrast, the resonance-type metamaterials is closer to the real medium, but the existing resonant-type 2D metamaterials more or less exit those disadvantages, such as great loss, narrow band, inhomogeneous isotropy and high dispersion. In this thesis, the 2-D closed all metal construction left-handed material is main research object. The electromagnetic mechanism of negative index refraction has been analyzed. Then the construction methods of resonance-type metamaterials have been systematically studied. Finally, the novel applications in microwave circuit and antenna of (space) electromagnetic resonance structure are explored and investigated as well. The main contents and research results of paper are as follows:1. According to classical electromagnetic theory, equivalent circuit theory, effective medium theories and rigorous mathematical derivation, the physical models and the parameter-extraction mathematical models of resonance-type metamaterials'structural units have been established. Then the charactoristics and construction methods of those units have been investigated in detail.2. The electromagnetic parameters of composite structures have been successfully extracted from scattering parameters based on the established mathematical-physical models of metamaterials'structural units. Then further study about the physical meaning of negative permittivity and negative permeability has been done based on the extraction results.3. A novel type of mu-negative materials structural unit has been presented. And the electromagnetic properties of this structural unit and its series derivative structures have been systematically analyzed and verified. On this basis, the 2-D closed all-metal construction left-handed material with compact structure has been successfully realized and verified experimentally.4. The novel applications in microwave circuit and antenna of electromagnetic resonance structure are explored and investigated. Then a new type of microstrip bandstop filters and a novel antenna matching method are presented.
