Assembly is a key step of the product development. Virtual assembly is very important to the product development. The handicraft can be testified through virtual reality in the term of product design. A virtual assembly system always includes several parts: data interface module, user interface module, virtual assembly environment module, data output module etc.The paper aims at the user interface of the virtual assembly system--how to interact with the virtual assembly environments through data glove. An efficiently human-machine interactive project is presented which can enhance the fidelity of the assembly simulation, improve the reliability of the analysis estimation of the virtual assembly and accelerate the research of the virtual assembly.In this paper, a virtual hand with twenty freedoms has been built which can fit the operation requirement of the virtual assembly by analyzing the structure of the real hand; research the algorithm of the collision detection between virtual hand and assembly parts.sencondly, the paper also researched how to drive the virtual hand with position following and data glove and the penetrating restrict algorithm of the virtual which can prevent the virtual hand penetrate the virtual parts. Finally, the paper presented a method to identify the hand gesture by distill the characteristic of the operating action of the hand. Both the identify method of the static action and he identify method of dynamic action are presented. the identifying technique of the operating action of the hand is validated in the virtual assembly of the vehicle.
