Virtual hand has great significance to virtual environment based on simulation, mostly to virtual assembly environment. In the traditional virtual manufacturing environment, users typically use a data glove to control the behavior of the virtual hand. This type of interaction will increase the operator’s operation and cognitive loads, because the operator is required to wear gloves all the time and act the gesture details. Almost all of the virtual hand animation is constructed based on the mechanism of collision detection, collision detection has poor real-time performance in most cases, and the virtual hand in the operation process cannot obtain the effective semantic information, so this mechanism is not conducive to the practical application. The goal of this research is to provide an intelligent efficient virtual hand for virtual manufacturing scenario. The perception ability of virtual hand is established by adding ring sensors to its structural model. An adaptive behavior mechanism of virtual hand is constructed to alleviate user’s cognitive load and manipulative loads which is composed by new perception algorithm the authors invented. This paper focuses on the realization of the grasping gesture selection mechanism and the gesture transition mechanism. In this paper, we realize a virtual assembly environment and various parts grab experiments to test and verify the availability of gesture selection and conversion algorithms, and compares to the traditional virtual hand which is use of collision detection mechanism. The experiment results show that the designed virtual hand in this paper has a good geometric realism and behavior realism. The method given in this paper has characteristics of usability, reliability and real-time.
