In the production and use of radar, the radar performance and indicators on the test has always play a very important role, radar simulator for various test and performance monitoring become the inevitable trend of development of equipment. This issue includes an airborne radar altimeter simulator for radar altimeter of field testing and performance monitoring. According to radar altimeter simulator designed for existing shortcomings and problems, especially caused by SAW delay line system bulky and can only simulate a few discrete points and other issues, this paper refer to a large number on the radar altimeter and radar simulator, presents a simulation approach based on a new radar signal design. The modular design method, simulated altitude was close to full height, with flexible configuration, the demand for radar altimeter according to a number of functional simulation, and implementation of system miniaturization and low-cost, mass production for the follow-up basis.In the design, according to the system functions and specifications, right system for each functional circuit deeply analysis, understanding and design, and use the program on the subject overall framework of the system and the various functional modules such as antenna, limiter, detector, PLL, pulse modulation switch and send and receive detailed monitoring of the realization. On this basis, the corresponding complete design, simulation and debugging, preparation of the frequency control module microcontroller program, completed a new radar altimeter simulator design. After debugging optimized, the delay in the radar altimeter simulator of the system is less than 50nS, the output pulse width modulation signal in the range of 40 ~ 280nS continuously adjustable, continuous wave output power greater than 15dBm, the phase noise is less than -82dBc/Hz @ 10kHz, and can achieve output frequencies in the 40MHz range jump by 1MHz stepping. The design of the radar altimeter simulator used in an aircraft's radar altimeter on the actual test, in the range of 20 ~ 8000m to realize the full height of radar altimeter analog, basically meet the rate of climb, low-level alarm functions simulation. Radar altimeter simulator of the design problems were analyzed, and points out the direction for improvement.
